New England Puritans used to speak of “following hard after God” and “setting our faces like a flint toward God.” These phrases sound strange to modern ears, but they contain valuable truth for our lives. Our generation suffers from the disease of “me-ism” — pursuing material possessions, money, fame, success, and anything else to make “me” happy. But me-centeredness always leaves a void in our hearts and souls. Why? Because the pursuit of our own happiness was never part of our original design . . . the pursuit of God was and is. And only in Him will we find what we’re searching for.
