“I believe in the Holy Ghost.” These words may sound familiar to those who were raised in churches where the Apostles’ Creed is frequently recited. In many churches, these six words are still commonly confessed but seldom truly understood. What, exactly, do they mean? Do we believe the Holy Spirit is a person? A force? A ghost? Do we believe He is still present today? If He dwells within us, how does His presence differ from that of the Father or the Son? In the final analysis, is the Holy Spirit’s work really all that important? Would it be different if He and His influence were suddenly removed from the earth?
